Lieutenant David Alexander Mackey

 

David Alexander Mackey was born on 28 December 1895 at Mullins, Donegal, the first or second of six children of miller John Mackey and his wife Isabella (nee Wilson). By 1911 he was living at 1 Eddrim Glebe, Donegal, and working as servant to the Reverend James Williams.

Mackey enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 31 May or 1 June 1915 (No.1645 – later Corps of Hussars No.71483). He embarked for France with F Squadron on 17 November that year.

During 1917 Mackey applied for a commission and returned to the UK for officer cadet training. On 27 March 1918 he was appointed 2nd lieutenant and posted to the Somerset Light Infantry.

He was promoted to lieutenant on 27 September 1919 and relinquished his commission on 11 May 1920.
